Necco Conversation Hearts - Crisp, Crunchy & Nostalgic

"Aaahhh - Necco Conversation Hearts are my Favorite!" - I just heard Lily my fellow candy co-worker exclaim as she popped a handful of the tiny hearts in her mouth. White (peppermint) and Pink (strawberry) are her favorite. She is sitting in the backroom of the store with me working away on her laptop, sandwiched between big boxes of Valentine candy and eating her favorite seasonal candy.

"Darn - I didn't even read mine" - said Keisha, another candy co-worker, as she popped a pink heart in her mouth. We are trying to determine the flavor of the pink conversation heart. I am not one to pass up candy so I joined in and ate a pink heart. Mine said "Sugar Pie" and I have determined the pink is strawberry. Just to be sure, we referred to the Necco Candy Company website. I was right. Of course, I've eaten these for years.

At The Confectionery, we are getting ready for Valentine's Day and our Valentine Candy selection is not complete without Conversation Hearts. They are crisp & crunchy and everyone remembers them from their childhood. Stop in soon, they will be gone before you know it. Everyone loves them!

We are peeking in the jar and reading some of the messages which include; Charm me, Stir my heart, Spice it up, Kiss me again, Love is sweet, Smile, Sugar Pie, Sweet Talk, Recipe for Love, My Boyfriend, My Girlfriend, Get my Drift, That Smile, Email me, Love Story and of course, Marry Me. Lily just told us that one day she would like to be proposed to with a "Marry Me" Large Conversation Heart and have her beau slide it across the table at her. Keisha said that wouldn't work for her - she forgets to read the message and just eats the hearts. It might seem like we aren't working, just eating candy but we are lucky - it's our job to eat candy!

Erica just came in the backroom with another handful of hearts and proclaimed "White one anyone?" What's your favorite flavor?

Gingerbread Houses - A holiday activity made easy!

Oh What Fun! Almost too cute to eat...

Gingerbread Houses are a fun holiday activity made easy with our

pre-assembled Gingerbread Houses.

All you need to do is make the Royal Icing frosting (super easy, just add water to our mix)

Add Candy and use your imagination.

On our small Candy Cottage - we used Cinnamon & Mint Gumdrops to line the roof.

Peppermint Jack Straws outline the house, white milkies adorn the front of the house,

Fruit & Creme Licorice Bites are on the roof and around the front of the house.

A Spearmint Ring was used to make a wreath.

The Fruit & Creme Bites were cut in half for the roof.

Small Rock Candy Cottage

This cottage was super easy to make!

Just frost the house and press the Chocolate Rocks into the icing.

We used Jelly Bean Candy Pebbles on the side. Haribo Raspberries were used on the roof,

an icing wreath decoration adds a festive touch to the front of the house.

Small Business Saturday at the Confectionery!

Longtime customers Kathy and Bob, amongst many others, came out for Small Business Saturday! Kathy and Bob shopped at the Confectionery where they came in for our seasonal favorites—peppermint shortbread bark and sour santas—they're only here once each year! While in the Village they also stopped by Caldwell's, and Mrs. Cook's to support Seattle's economy.

We here at the Confectionery pride ourselves on being a small, local business. We've been located in University Village for more than 40 years. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses have generated two out of every three net new jobs over the past 15 years and employ over half of all private sector employees.

Chocolate in Cuba!

A Candy Girl's father was recently in Havana, Cuba and came across a Chocolate Museum. Knowing how much we love chocolate and enjoy seeing different shops around the world, he took some photos and wrote about his experience for us. Hugh loves chocolate as well and is especially fond of our Dark Chocolate Espresso Malt balls.

You wouldn’t necessarily expect to see a Museum of Chocolate in Havana, capital of the (socialist) Republic of Cuba. But even socialists like chocolate! Right in the center of the Old Townis this tidy and very popular chocolate center with descriptions of beans, processing, chocolate-making, and (of course) lots of yummy eats. I visited it the week of October 17 while in Havana for a conference of lawyers, law professors and judges. - Hugh Spitzer

This Spring, the Confectionery participated in University Village's wedding event - Bride Ideas. Participating stores offered tips and products for creating a unique wedding. At the Confectionery, we designed a Pink & Green Candy Bar perfect for any spring-time wedding and displayed it in our store window.

Showcased products included our custom photo lollipops, wedding cake mints and cookies, milk chocolate foil balls in a variety of fun colors, rock candy on a stick, pink grapefruit sours, sour green apples, strawberry & cream taffy as well as pink, green & white pearl gumballs and milk maltballs in pastel colors. We also have the traditional wedding favorites such as jordan almonds and dutch mints.

We used the paper fans, lanterns and fresh flowers to accent our candy color palette. We specialize in helping our customers create candy bars that will add flair to their event. We start with the wedding colors, select the sweets and determine quantity of candy needed. Candy is an easy way to add decoration to your event and your guests will enjoy the sweets. Everyone loves candy.

Lisa Vammen Flowers created arrangements using single pink & green flowers in low glass cube vases. The flowers attract the eye with a pop of bright color and offer a crisp, clean look to complete the design of our window display.

Customized Candy Bar

Last week, Ing Direct in Seattle treated their employees to a Friday afternoon Candy Bar from The Confectionery. Employees had a fun variety of candies to choose from.

We selected orange & navy candies to coordinate with the company colors. The candies displayed are Sour Peaches, a custom mix of Orange Sherbet, Cantaloupe, Tangerine & Orange Crush Jelly Bellies, Blueberry Jelly Bellies, Sour Blue Raspberry Belts, Orange Swedish Fish, Black Licorice Scottie Dogs, Milk Malt Balls, Milk Chocolate Caramel Balls, Blue & Orange Milkies, Blue Raspberry & Orange Creamsicle Salt Water Taffy, Orange Zotz & Orange Toostie Rolls, Orange Gumballs, Blue Foiled Milk Chocolate Stars and long Country Store Old Fashioned Taffy.

To complete the look, we created party flags for the Orange & Blueberry Candy Sticks.

Happy April Fool's Day - A Sweet Surprise

New from Jelly Belly - Candy Peas & Carrots have arrived at The Confectionery just in time for April Fool's Day. The Peas are Green Apple flavor and the Baby Carrots are Orange Sherbet. Serve some with dinner, they will make your family smile! These vegetables are a sweet surprise and the kids will be sure to clean their plate.

Jelly Belly Candy Company has been making Candy Corn and Mellocremes since the late 1800's, longer than any company in the candy business. Candy Peas and Carrots may seem like a new idea but candy vegetables have been around since the turn of the century. Some of the first mellocreme candy was made in vegetable shapes, which is how candy corn got it's "kernel of corn" shape.

The front door is crafted out of Fruit Striped Gum with two Mini Candy Canes on each side of the Double Bubble Gum doors. The House is finished with Haribo Mega Roulettes. The trees are mini Icing Decorations. This house is fun and easy to make, you just need to pick your favorite Jelly Bellies.

To build this Rock Candy Chalet we used Milk Chocolate Rocks, Candy Pebbles (which are old fashioned jelly beans), Large Gumdrops, Mini Peppermint Jack Straws and Icing Decorations, which include our Tiny Lights, Snowman, Wreath & Star.

Sweets Cinnamon Squares were used to construct the chimney.

Barbie's Dream Gingerbread House - Home Sweet Home

This Home "Sweet" Home was decorated with Pink & White Jordan Almonds. Pink Gumdrops line the roof while Necco Wafers create picture perfect shingles. The front of the house is lined in Pink Lemonade Candy Sticks, the Mint Wreath is so cute and the french doors are Dark Chocolate Molasses Crisps. Notice the Raspberry & Cherry Sour Belt awning and the Crushed Peppermint detail. Strawberry Vanilla Taffy will keep guests from nibbling at the house. The glass candy jar in the background is filled with Red Apple Jelly Bellies.

Jawbreaker Icing Igloo

This Jawbreaker Icing Igloo was created to withstand the blowing forces of the Big Bad Wolf. This sugar shack will not be falling down any time soon. Mini Jawbreakers were used on the front and sides of this Gingerbread House. Red Hots make perfect lights. Fruit Creme Licorice lines the roof and when they are cut in half, they make perfect shingles and were used to make the wreath on the door. Sour Watermelon Belts make for a very sweet entry into this candy cottage. A Sour Green Apple Licorice Lace frame the door and the door knob is a Sweet Tart Decorating Bead. The Icing Decorations add to the design with the Happy Holidays sign and the Icing Tree by the front door. Our snowman was made by using a White Chocolate Maltball, a Caramel Ball and a piece of Watermelon Sour Belt for his scarf.

Small Rock Candy Cottage

This Rock Candy Cottage is decorated for the Holidays! It features Milk Chocolate Rocks for siding. Old Fashioned Large Gumdrops (Lime & Cherry) line the roof top, Non-Pareil Jingle Jels work well as shingles and the chimney is a piece of Peppermint Ribbon Candy. Peppermint Jack Straws were used on the corners of the house.The detail on the front of the house is complete with an electric cord made from a Sour Green Apple Licorice Lace - they also frame the door. A piece of Fruit Creme Licorice is used for a wreath on the front door. Rainbow Sour Belts make up the front porch and the Tiny Lights Icing Decorations are the envy of the candy neighbors. White Milkies are set to look like snow in the yard. These sweet folks even decorated their icing tree!

Through Sunday, The Confectionery is offering a selection of candy apples that includes dark chocolate and sea salt, $9.95; caramel covered in half dark chocolate and half milk chocolate, $9.95; caramel, white chocolate and cinnamon sugar, $9.95; and caramel and toffee, with choice of nuts (crushed macadamia, almonds, or peanuts) for $12.95.

King 5's New Day Northwest knew just who to call when they wanted to have a special segment on nostalgic candies -- owner of the Confectionery (which New Day called "the ultimate headquarters for candy with an old-fashioned feel") and life-long candy enthusiast Kristi Holmes!
Kristi had a great display of candy from every decade of the twentieth century, up to the favorites for kids spending their allowance on treats today. And as always she had tons of fun candy facts to share with Margaret.
Never one to pass up sharing the candy love, Kristi left everyone in the audience with a treat bag filled with a variety of the delicious retro goodies.

Thought we'd share a great example of the kind of display The Confectionery can put together for a wedding, birthday, cocktail party, barbecue - heck, we can't think of any occasion that isn't better when you add candy!

Here's the full set up: where to begin? Our color theme for this wedding display was pink, orange, yellow & white. Pink milkies add a punch of color at the back of the display, and a shallow bowl in the center is filled with champagne bubbles and a Jelly Belly mix. Beside that is a small bowl of colorful malt balls. To the far right are Mounties

How about with our bright and summery gumball mix, topped with our bright pink two-piece chocolate box. The boxes can be filled with sea salt caramels (milk chocolate or dark chocolate half-dipped, or nut) & toffee or almost any of our delicious selection of truffles. To the right you can see a plate of our wedding cake mints, and above that a fanned selection of our flavored crystal rock sticks.

Speaking of truffles, here are a few of our favorites! From top left: Raspberry, Mayan, milk chocolate gift and salted caramel butterfly.

Our fun old-fashioned candy buttons make for a fun accent, and behind them are licorice mounties. Mmm!

Chocolate Adventures in Europe!

Our lovely Candy Girl Jenny went on a European vacation recently, and brought us back pictures of her tastiest tourist excursions in Brussels, Prague and Paris!

Jenny told us: "Chocolate was everywhere in Brussels! The choices were overwhelming. The store displays were fantastic - this is Brussels' icon, the 'Mannken Pis.'"

There she is! Globe-trotter (and chocolate enthusiast) Jenny in Prague. "I visited a chocolate museum in Prauge, which described the history of chocolate and had a vast array of historic chocolate wrappers and packaging," Jenny told us. "I even got to see a demonstration of how filled chocolates are made."

Jenny said, "The museum also had a display of chocolate cats!" No offense to Prague, but these cats don't hold a candle to our chocolate bunnies at Easter!

Ah, La Belle France! "I went to Le Mere de Familie Gourmand chocolate shop on the Rue Cler in Paris," Jenny said. "They had delicious caramels!"

Here she is at an adorable confection shop on l'Ile St Louis. "The chocolate fountain was amazing!" she said.

Ah, the coup d'etat! La Maison du Chocolat! Jenny told us this landmark chocolatier is next to the Louvre, and has great macaroons. Mmm!

You said it, Hello Kitty! Our line of retro-inspired lunchboxes always fly off the shelves. Not only do they make a clever (and efficient) basket for a birthday gift, they are uber-cute and functional too.

We've added perennial favorite Hello Kitty from Sanrio to our lunchbox selection this year -- much to the delight of our Candy Girls!

Marina, a long-time candy fan who has been shopping at the Confectionery for 20 years, decorated this gorgeous gingerbread house with grandson Mark. Moonstruck Chocolatier Gets Candy Cred

Moonstruck Chocolate's Chef Julian Rose -- the company’s master chocolatier and the host of our Wine and Chocolate event earlier this year -- was named to Dessert Professional magazine's first annual list of Top Ten Chocolatiers for North America! The 2009 Top Ten Chocolatiers list will be featured in the December issue of Dessert Professional magazine.

At the Chocolate and Wine event, Chef Rose shared his knowledge from a classical pastry education and 25-year professional career, beginning with his earliest days working in his parents’ pastry shop. As Moonstruck’s Master Chocolatier, Chef Rose develops new delicious morsels and refines our existing favorites. We know we can always count on Moonstruck Chocolate for beautiful and delicious goodies, thanks to Chef Rose!

We want to extend thanks once again to Chef Rose for taking the time to teach us all so much about chocolate, and wine! It was another incredible evening at the Confectionery!

Now that fall is here (really, really here--cloud cover and all) we started thinking about all the nice warm things that give us comfort through the colder months. And of course one of the first things that came to mind was Moonstruck's incredible Mayan truffle. We carry this morsel all year, but there's no better time than a gray day to have a savory sensation from south of the border -- chocolate, almonds and cinnamon blend seamlessly to make this an excellent pairing with a morning coffee, or an afternoon cup of cocoa. (We don't believe in chocolate moderation.)

This Wednesday the University Village will have an outdoor screening of Grease just down the street from the Confectionery, next to Pottery Barn Kids and across from Starbucks. The movie will begin at sundown (approximately 8:30 pm) but starting at 7 pm we will be selling movie treats, popcorn, cotton candy, soda, floats, ice cream and, of course, candy! Twitter followers & Facebook fans will get a free candy treat bag. Professional swing dancers will also be here teaching everyone the moves from Grease!

Chocolate and Wine: A Perfect Pairing

On June 14th the Confectionery will be hosting a wine and chocolate pairing class taught by Moonstruck Chocolate's chocolatier, Julian Rose. He'll be giving us a history of chocolate, and then teaching (by example!) how best to pair chocolates with sweet wines, champagne, whites, reds and ports. Everyone knows how well wine and chocolate go together, but with Julian's expertise we'll learn how to get the maximum palate pleasure out of the correctly chosen duo.

As an added bonus, Julian will also help us debut Moonstruck's new sea creatures truffle line, just in time for summer!

Another perfect (not to mention adorable) gift we have for chocolate fans is this selection of Moonstruck's spring chicks. The truffles are filled with the Portland confectioner's Mayan filling, a warmly spicy South American-style ganache center. Mmm!

No matter what, these always end up being the real star of the show come Easter-time-- Our chocolate-covered Peeps! Don't even think about wasting these finger-licking fowl in the microwave!

Which came first, our truffle chicks or our bulk chocolate eggs? Signs of Spring

Just over a week to go before Easter Sunday, and The Confectionery is awash in chocolate rabbits, malt ball eggs, pastel Jelly Bellies, truffle farm animals and eggs, and so much more!

For the kids we have baskets in every color imaginable, ready to be filled with an adorable stuffed rabbits, some of our delicious seasonal goodies nestled in brightly colored "grass," and topped with a bow!

But of course we would never forget the treats for more mature palates, like these delectable hazelnut and almond praline milk chocolate Michele Cluizel farm animals.

Portland's Moonstruck, always a local favorite, has their own take on truffle barnyard bonbons. The set includes a signature milk chocolate pony and cow, milk toffee pig, and extra bittersweet lamb.

This is a great example of our final product. When you come into the store you have an array of fantastic wrapped basket and gift options for every price point, all made with joy and care by our staff of Candy Girls.

Ever since we moved into our incredible new space a few years ago, The Confectionery has been getting more and more attention. Here's what Seattle Metropolitan, recently voted the best city magazine in the country for 2008, had to say about us:

Sure, we’re a city of educated foodies and there’s a farmers market full of just-picked produce in every nabe in town, but we don’t neglect our sweet tooth either. Proof is the Confectionery, where two generations of adults have felt like kids in an old-fashioned candy store. The candy-colored interior and giant, vintage-style soda-shop jars of Jordan almonds, lollipops, gobstoppers, and chocolate covered gummy bears entice the little ones, too, but there’s something sophisticated and downright artful about the sweet traditional taffies and new-world sugar-free treats.
